From April 2025, all EVs will need to pay road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty).

How much will you pay?

• £10 in the first year (new EVs)

• Then £195 per year after that

• If your EV cost over £40,000, there’s an extra £425/year for 5 years

Does this apply to older EVs too?

Yes — even if you already own the car, the new rules apply from April 2025.

Is an EV still cheaper to run than a diesel or hybrid?

Yes! Even with these changes:

• Charging is still much cheaper than fuel

• EVs cost less to maintain

• No ULEZ charge (£12.50/day for older petrol/diesel cars)
