Global Electric Vehicle Sales Surge to Record-Breaking Q2 in 2024
Electric vehicle (EV) sales hit an all-time high in Q2 2024, with a 19% increase from Q1. Data from New AutoMotive's Global Electric Vehicle Tracker (GEVT) shows nearly 2.6 million EVs sold globally since May, driven mainly by China’s booming market. Chinese petrol and diesel vehicle sales fell 20% year-on-year in June, potentially leading to ICE vehicle obsolescence by 2028.
The U.S. also saw strong growth, with Q2 sales up 12% from Q1, totaling over 1.15 million EVs sold in the past year. In Europe, despite tariffs on Chinese EVs, 80% of EU countries reported increased sales between May and June. Germany and the UK reached their highest EV market shares since December 2023, with 15% and 19% respectively. The UK is on track to meet the IEA’s forecast of 25% EV and plug-in hybrid market share by the end of 2024.
Emerging markets like Thailand, India, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico saw EV sales more than double year-on-year, potentially surpassing the UK by year-end.
Ben Nelmes, CEO of New AutoMotive, highlighted the global trend: “Rapid EV sales growth shows the transition to cleaner transport is well underway. Governments must remain committed to EVs, encouraging adoption through incentives and regulations.”
New AutoMotive’s tracker monitors the global shift away from diesel and petrol vehicles, covering 42 major markets and providing detailed data on car sales, targets, and regulations, all available for public access.
