How To Become An Uber Driver

Updated: Apr 9

When it comes to becoming an Uber driver, many people do not know how to get started. After all, Uber drivers are everywhere and though people find themselves realising just how great it can be to become an Uber driver, and how beneficial the job is as a whole, they often get stuck at the first hurdle. So, how do you become an Uber driver?

Requirements for Becoming an Uber Driver

If you are looking for a new job, are wanting to change career or simply want to convert from being a standard taxi driver into an Uber driver there are requirements that need to be met. Failing to meet these requirements could mean you are not eligible to apply, or may not pass the application process. Before applying to become an Uber driver you will need to have a private hire licence from your local council and this must be a council that Uber is licensed by. However, if you are new to driving and do not have a private hire licence, Uber can assist you with this.

Once you have a private hire licence you must then make sure you meet Uber’s driver requirements. Uber wants to make sure all its drivers are safe and competent to ensure the safety of customers. Therefore, only those who are at least 21 years of age with a valid UK or EU driving licence are eligible. Additionally, most cities will have a set minimum for the number of years driving experience required.

If you have a private hire licence and you meet the age and driving requirements, it’s time to move on to the different checks and tests that must be done.

  1. In London, TfL now requires that all private-hire drivers demonstrate a minimum level of reading, writing, speaking and understanding English.

  2. You will be required to have a medical check to ensure you are able to drive safely and without any problems.

  3. A CRB check is required for all Uber drivers. This is the same check that is carried out on those who work with children, with the elderly and with vulnerable people. In short, it’s a way for Uber to know that all drivers have no criminal history that would pose a threat to customers.

Applying To Become An Uber Driver

Before you apply to become an Uber driver you will need a vehicle. All vehicles used with Uber must be at least 2008 or newer. However, if you do not currently have a vehicle or yours is too old there are solutions. For example, at WeFlex we offer rentals in London that meet Uber’s requirements and we even have many more that are ready to own.

If you meet all the above requirements for becoming an Uber driver, you can get started with the application process. Applying to become an Uber driver is relatively simple and can be done online on the Uber website. Once you have an Uber training date booked, contact us to reserve your car so you can start working the same day.
