As of June 2024, Zapmap reports over 64,000 public charging devices for EV drivers in the UK, marking a net increase of 11,195 chargers in six months and a 46% year-on-year growth.

Faster Installation Rates

The pace of installation has increased, with an average of 1,865 new charging devices added monthly in 2024, up from 1,387 in 2023—a 34% rise.

Expansion of Rapid Charging

The number of rapid and ultra-rapid chargers (50kW+) has grown by 49% since June 2023, totalling over 12,551 units. High-powered chargers (150kW+) have more than doubled to 5,416, a 114% increase. Regions like the North West and the South West have seen significant growth in these high-powered chargers.

Proliferation of Charging Hubs

The number of high-powered charging hubs (six or more rapid chargers) has increased from 264 to 386 since the end of 2023. Key new hubs include:

  • Welcome Break Michaelwood M5 South Services: 16 ultra-rapid chargers.

  • Robin Leisure Park, Wigan: 16-device hub with 300kW chargers.

  • Cartsdyke Avenue, Greenock: 12 high-powered 350kW charge points.

  • Mottram in Longdendale: 14 ultra-rapid devices.

Growth in On-Street Charging

The UK now has nearly 800,000 home charge points and an additional 3,500 new on-street chargers in the first half of 2024, totalling 23,290. Greater London leads with 17,269 on-street chargers, a 59% increase. On-street chargers outside London have grown by 61%, from 3,737 to 6,021.

Future Developments

The Government's LEVI (Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure) funding is set to further boost on-street charging, with significant expansion anticipated for 2025.

Industry Insights

Melanie Shufflebotham, Co-founder & COO at Zapmap, highlights the progress: “More than 11,000 additional charge points are now available for electric car drivers across the country.” Vicky Read, CEO at ChargeUK, adds: “The incredible growth in charge point deployment should give confidence to EV drivers that the network they need is there for them.”

The UK's EV charging infrastructure is expanding rapidly, making it easier for drivers to switch to electric vehicles with confidence.
