The UK is set to achieve its target of over 300,000 public electric vehicle (EV) charge points by 2030 if the current growth rate continues. The number of public charge points has more than doubled in the past two years, with a new one being installed every 25 minutes recently. This rapid expansion means charge points are increasing faster than new EV sales.

Recommendations for Sustained Growth

To maintain this momentum, ChargeUK's report emphasises several key measures:

  • Removing Delays: Addressing delays in grid connections, planning, and permits to speed up installations.

  • Using Renewable Electricity: Incorporating more renewable electricity into the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO).

  • Making EV Charging Affordable: Equalising VAT on charging and encouraging lower electricity costs to make EV charging more affordable.

  • Improving Signage and Access: Enhancing signage and supporting access to EVs through new, second-hand, or fleet markets.

  • Encouraging Private Investment: Clarifying the Rapid Charging Fund, speeding up the Local EV Infrastructure Fund, and addressing high standing charges.

Industry and Government Support Needed

Vicky Read, CEO of ChargeUK, highlighted that while the outlook is positive, continued effort and government support are crucial. She calls on the government to remove barriers, offer affordable charging options, and support investment to ensure the UK meets its 2030 goal.

Naomi Nye from Drax Electric Vehicles welcomed the progress but pointed out ongoing challenges with EV charger access and range. She called for more government support, clearer incentives, and updated regulations to encourage businesses and fleet managers to adopt EVs. In a study by Drax Electric Vehicles, over a quarter of fleet decision-makers cited a lack of government support as a significant barrier to EV adoption.

Overall, strong collaboration between the government and industry is essential to overcome obstacles and ensure the successful expansion of the UK’s EV charging infrastructure.
